Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay born August 24 72, in Long Beach, California. DuVernay was inspired to follow her passion of art by her aunt Denise when she was a kid. The aunt who was a night shift nurse, let her study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. DuVernay was captivated by the film of 1961 West Side Story after her aunt recommended the film to DuVernay. DuVernay realized that art could be a powerful tool to promote the cause of activism. DuVernay was raised by her mother who was aware of her social circle and taught her to utilize the arts as a way to express herself. While DuVernay was raised living in Compton with her family she spent every summer living in Lowndes County Alabama where her father's family grew up for generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the nearby town Selma Alabama. The time she spent in Selma Alabama inspired her later to make a film about the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as well as the Civil Rights Movement. In 1990 DuVernay graduated from Saint Joseph High School in Lakewood California. After graduating she attended the University of California Los Angeles where she received certificates in English as well as African American studies. DuVernay began to produce for broadcast journalism while she was in her the college. Her career began as an assistant for CBS News in the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste from one of juries. Her tasks to perform left her dissatisfied and, following her decision not to continue in the field of journalism, she was able to move to the field of public relations. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an assistant publicist in the studio that was small. She founded The DuVernay Agency, her PR firm, in 1999. Alongside PR, the agency has launched lifestyle networks and advertising campaigns such as The Urban Beauty Collective.
